A century of breeding, shaped by real work and real conditions.

Where traditions become innovations

Poltavaplemservis is a story of professional mastery that has survived empires, wars, and systemic change — without ever losing its purpose.

The beginning

Our story began in 1912 near Poltava, a region that at the time was part of the Russian Empire and is now central Ukraine.

The Royal Stables established here operated as a state stud farm for cavalry breeding. From the first recorded stallion, Almaz (born in 1904), begins a continuous line of documented selection work.

Precision was essential then — and it remains central to our work today.

Years that shaped resilience

The revolutionary period and civil war that followed the collapse of the Russian Empire disrupted agricultural and breeding institutions across the region, including what is now Ukraine.

Many stud farms ceased operations or were destroyed. Poltava was among the very few that continued working without interruption.

During these years, breeders preserved pedigree animals under extreme conditions, often saving breeding stock individually. Documentation, lineage, and selection work were maintained despite the instability.

It was during this period that a defining principle took shape — to protect genetic value and professional continuity, even when systems around it collapse.

The era of science

During the early Soviet period, the Poltava State Stud evolved into a center of applied breeding science, operating within a state-led agricultural research system that covered much of Eastern Europe at the time.

Poltava was among the first facilities in the region to introduce artificial insemination — a breakthrough technology that fundamentally changed livestock reproduction.

Specialists from Poltava trained colleagues from other regions, contributing to the formation of a national breeding and reproduction school.

An honorary certificate preserved from this period, personally signed by Joseph Stalin, remains not as a political symbol, but as evidence that professional skill, scientific discipline, and measurable results were formally recognized even in that era.

A new direction

In the second half of the 20th century, Poltava entered a new phase of development as breeding priorities shifted from horses to cattle, reflecting the growing role of dairy and beef production.

Elite breeding bulls were introduced, including Swiss Brown genetics from Switzerland — marking the beginning of systematic work with internationally recognized cattle lines.

The stud farm was reorganized into the Poltava Regional Breeding Association, expanding its mandate from breeding practice to regional genetic development.

Once again, Poltava was at the forefront of technological change. In the 1960s, semen cryopreservation was implemented, enabling long-term genetic storage and significantly improving herd productivity and selection efficiency.

The enterprise regularly presented its results at national agricultural exhibitions, and over time the name Poltavaplemservis became closely associated with breeding excellence and professional reliability across the region.

Today

On April 13, 1998, the enterprise was reorganized as Private Joint Stock Company Poltavaplemservis.

Today, on the same historic land in Horbanivka, the work that began more than a century ago continues — now focused on modern cattle genetics and herd reproduction.

Our value lies in continuous modernization.
We invest in infrastructure, laboratory technology, and the genetic base of our breeding bulls.

Our herd is systematically updated using proven global genetics, delivering predictable quality, strong selection potential, and long-term efficiency for partner farms.

Looking ahead, Poltavaplemservis continues to develop as a reliable genetic partner — strengthening its scientific base, expanding technological capabilities, and building on a legacy shaped by responsibility, precision, and long-term thinking.

Today, Poltavaplemservis is:

1

The oldest continuously operating breeding enterprise in Ukraine (110+ years)

2

A producer of high-value bull semen with proven genetic performance

3

Trusted by over 270 artificial insemination points, with expertise transferable across markets

4

An early leader in artificial insemination in Eastern Europe, maintaining a long-term commitment to modern genetic standards

Between tradition and biotechnology

Our approach is deliberately balanced. We do not break with the past — we build on it while working toward what comes next.

What was once called breeding has evolved into genetics: more precise, more data-driven, and more controlled — yet guided by the same fundamental purpose shared across generations and borders: producing stronger, healthier, and more productive livestock.

We operate at the intersection of experience and technology.
Poltavaplemservis has been chosen for over a century not because of claims, but because results consistently confirm trust.
